“The Coming One” Season 1 (明日之子第一季)

From June to September 2017, Hua Chenyu participated in Tencent Video’s girl idol discovery and development variety show “The Coming One (明日之子)” as a regular mentor.

1. About the show

The program divides the contestants into three groups: the “Beauty Track (美颜赛道)” which focuses on appearance, the “Talent Track (独秀赛道)” which focuses on creative ability and the “Vocal Track (魔音赛道)” which focuses on vocal ability.

Hua serves as the mentor of “Vocal Track”. In addition, the mentor for the “Beauty Track” is Yang Mi, a popular Chinese actress, and the mentor for the “Talent Track” is Joker Xue, a singer-songwriter who is good at writing lyrics.

2. Anecdote

Later in the show, Hua cut his hair very short in another variety show “Flowers on Trip (旅途的花样)”. He was nicknamed “Shell-head Brother (壳哥)” because his short hair was like a smooth eggshell.
He shed tears while singing “Forest Polka” for the eliminated contestant Meng Zikun.
In EP12, there is a part where the mentor and the contestant perform together. On the day of filming, although Hua Chenyu had a fever, he still performed two intense songs perfectly. After the performance, Hua had to lean on the host to stand firm.
Also in EP12, Hua was filmed secretly cutting his nails with nail clippers. This was in preparation for playing the piano in a subsequent performance.
The scene where Hua secretly picked up trash under the table after cutting his nails was also captured by fans on their mobile phones.
Among the contestants, a virtual singer named HeZ was assigned to Hua Chenyu’s “Vocal Track”. The addition of virtual singers caused huge controversy in public opinion. Many viewers believed that the program production team lost fairness in pursuit of topicality.
Because the mainstream public opinion ignored the virtual singer’s musical ability and directly denied the value of his existence, Hua felt very disappointed. When HeZ was eliminated, Hua shed tears again.
